The house where the “Holy Doctor,” Feofil Havrylovych Yanovskyi, lived

In the courtyard wing at Yaroslaviv Val Street, 13-B, Theophil Yanovskyi lived from 1905 until his death in 1928. A memorial plaque on the building commemorates him.

He was a distinguished Kyiv physician, professor of medicine, and one of the founders of Ukraine’s therapeutic school. From this address, he traveled daily to the city’s clinics and hospitals, where he treated patients with pulmonary and infectious diseases, advanced diagnostic methods, and helped shape medical science.

Yanovskyi was respected not only as a scholar and a pioneer of anti-tuberculosis care — he organized the Ukrainian Research Institute of Tuberculosis in 1922 — but also as a deeply compassionate person. He treated poor patients free of charge, offered support to Kyiv residents, and was known for his generosity.

For his humanity, he became known as the “holy doctor.” His legacy lives on both in the history of Kyiv and in the tradition of Ukrainian medicine.

He also came from the historic Yanovskyi family and was related to Mykola Gogol, adding another cultural layer to this Kyiv address.
