Heroes’ Alley Krut is a small street in Pechersk, running from Slavy Square to Andriy Pervozvanny Square. Until 2001, it was part of the ancient Dnieper Descent, and received a separate name in honor of the young defenders of Ukraine who died on January 29, 1918 in the battle near Kruty. At that time, mostly students and high school students opposed the Bolshevik troops, trying to delay their advance on Kyiv – and this sacrifice became one of the symbols of the struggle for independence.
At the beginning of the alley, next to the Palace of Children and Youth, there is a sculptural composition “Eternal Kyiv” – a bronze ball with bas-reliefs of Kyiv temples by the famous sculptor Frank Meisler. From here, the path to Askold’s Grave – another iconic place in Kyiv history – opens. This short alley seems to connect several time layers at once: the ancient descent to the Dnieper, the memory of the heroes of 1918, and contemporary art.
