In Volodymyrska Hill Park, a fountain with the sculptural composition Archangel Michael — Guardian of Kyiv was unveiled on September 19, 2020. The bronze figure of Archangel Michael — regarded as the patron and protector of Kyiv since the times of Kyivan Rus’ — symbolizes the protection of the city and its people.
The composition carries deep symbolic meaning. The bell beneath the sculpture is decorated with miniature depictions of Kyiv’s most famous churches, hills, and landmarks, representing the city’s multicultural heritage, spirituality, and beauty, while also serving as a sign of gratitude to all those who have defended and continue to defend Kyiv.
In 2021, a tactile 3D model of the sculpture was installed nearby as part of an inclusive urban initiative. The miniature replica includes Braille plaques and a QR code, allowing people with visual impairments to better explore the monument and learn about its history.
In this way, the space of Volodymyrska Hill Park combines symbolism, art, and accessibility, making Kyiv’s cultural heritage more open to everyone.
