On Independence Square, in the center of a large fountain, stands a sculptural composition dedicated to the legendary founders of Kyiv. Installed in 2001 during a large-scale reconstruction of the square, it is the second monument in the city to Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv, and Lybed — the first is in Navodnytskyi Park on the banks of the Dnieper near the Paton Bridge.
The large stone block depicts four of them: Kyi in battle armor with a shield and sword — a leader and warrior; Shchek with a plow — a symbol of agriculture and peaceful labor; Khoriv with a bow, arrows, and a hunting horn. In honor of the brothers, the people of Kyiv named the Kyiv mountains – Kyivytsia, Shchekavytsia, and Khorivtsia. Next to the brothers is sister Lybid, and swans soar above her, which gave the name to the Kyiv river of the same name.
The author of the composition is sculptor Anatoliy Kushch, whose works are already inscribed in the face of the Maidan: he created both the Independence Monument with Berehynia on top of the column, and the sculpture of Archangel Michael – the heavenly patron of Kyiv. Thanks to the fountain around the monument, it turns into a real water installation, especially spectacular in the warm season.
