Ivana Franka Street

Ivana Franka Street

Ivana Franka Street is a historic street in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, stretching from Yaroslaviv Val Street to Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in the area known as Afanasiivskyi Yar. It begins its descent from building No. 11 on Yaroslaviv Val, gradually revealing the hilly terrain and significant changes in elevation that shaped the street along the filled-in ravine. This layout gives the street a distinct spatial character and highlights the natural landscape of this part of the city.

The street emerged in the second half of the 19th century as a combination of Afanasiivska and Nestorivska streets, whose original names were connected to the local ravine and to Nestor the Chronicler, a monk of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. In 1889, the two streets were merged under the name Nestorivska, and since 1926 the street has borne the name of Ivan Franko — the prominent Ukrainian poet, writer, thinker, and public figure.

Ivana Franka Street connects Kyiv’s Old Town with the university quarter, leading to Taras Shevchenko Boulevard near Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Universytet Metro Station, linking different historical and cultural layers of Kyiv.
