The Old Kyiv Pechersk Fortress is a unique monument of 18th-century military architecture stretching across the Pechersk Hills near the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Built between 1706 and 1723, it was intended to defend Kyiv during the Great Northern War. The bastions, moats, and massive walls extending for more than 3.5 kilometers have survived to the present day in remarkably good condition — a rare case for structures of such age.
Interestingly, the fortress never took part in any real battle, as enemies simply never reached it. Today, the fortress is part of both the National preserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra” and the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, with several sections open to visitors.
