The pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Volodymyrskyi Uzviz, also known as the Glass Bridge, connects the Volodymyrska Gorka Park near the monument to Volodymyr the Great with Khreshchaty Park next to the Arch of Freedom of the Ukrainian People. The idea of such a bridge has existed since Soviet times, but it was implemented only in 2019 – construction was completed by the Day of Kyiv. The 216-meter-long metal structures were manufactured by the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Plant “Okean”, and the steel for them was produced by the Mariupol “Azovstal”. The bridge has two smooth curves in the horizontal plane and observation platforms with a glass floor, through which the slopes of Volodymyrskyi Uzviz are visible.
The bridge survived a serious test on October 10, 2022, when a Russian missile fell next to it during a massive missile strike on Kyiv. It hit the structure and flew further down the slope – which, according to eyewitnesses, saved the bridge from destruction. The glass inserts were damaged, but the structure itself survived. Soon, the network compared the Kyiv Glass Bridge with the Kerch Bridge – the first one got hit, but it survived; the second one – built by the Russians – suffered much greater damage from the explosion.
