The Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre is one of the oldest and most authoritative theaters in Kyiv, with a history dating back to 1891. It is located in the building of the former Bergonie Theatre at Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street, where in the late 19th century Mykola Solovtsov established the first permanent theater in the city. Since then, this stage has become an important center of the capital’s theatrical life.
The theater received the name of Lesya Ukrainka in 1941, opening a new chapter in its history with the premiere of the drama The Stone Host. Over the decades, this production returned to the stage in various interpretations, forming a deep connection between the theater and the writer’s art.
In the 20th century, the theater went through changes of eras, state systems, and artistic directions, while maintaining a high professional level and a strong acting school.
Today, the Lesya Ukrainka Theatre is an epicenter of the contemporary theatrical process in Kyiv, known for its vibrant productions and leading actors. Combining respect for classical tradition with openness to modern forms, the theater remains a living cultural space and a meeting place for generations.
