Mykhailivska Street is one of the oldest in Kyiv, leading from Maidan Nezalezhnosti to Mykhailivska Square. It originated in the times of Kyivan Rus on the way from Lyadska Gate to the Mykhailivska Golden-Domed Monastery, in whose honor it was named.
Built up mainly in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the street belonged to the first category: only stone houses of at least two floors were allowed to be built here. The dense perimeter development is explained by the fact that the land in this area has risen sharply in price – and architects used every meter. Famous Kyiv architects took part in the construction: Volodymyr Nikolayev, Mykola Kazansky, Andriy-Ferdinand Krauss, Pavlo Sparro and others. The street still retains the appearance of that era – with its eclecticism, brick style, neo-renaissance and modernism.
