Mystetskyi Arsenal is one of the largest exhibition centers in Europe, located in the heart of Kyiv directly opposite the Holy Gates of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The building has a complex and fascinating history: it was constructed between 1784 and 1801 as a military arsenal — a storage facility for weapons and ammunition. The total area of the complex exceeds 22,000 square meters, while the length of the main building reaches 200 meters.
In 2010, after a large-scale reconstruction, the building received a new purpose and became the country’s principal venue for major cultural events. The name “Mystetskyi Arsenal” (“Art Arsenal”) symbolizes a transformation and rethinking of the historical building’s function. It represents the transition from militarization to the preservation, creation, and protection of the nation’s spiritual shield, where art and culture themselves become the arsenal.
The venue regularly hosts the Book Arsenal — the largest book festival in Ukraine, attracting tens of thousands of visitors every year — as well as international art exhibitions, music and theater festivals, fashion shows, and international conferences. The architecture of the building is itself a work of art: massive brick vaults, halls over 10 meters high, and natural light streaming through large windows create a unique atmosphere in which the historic walls give contemporary art a special resonance.
Mystetskyi Arsenal is not merely an exhibition venue but also a symbol of Ukraine’s cultural revival. Between 2022 and 2024, it hosted large-scale exhibitions dedicated to Ukrainian identity and resilience during the full-scale invasion. The space is open to artists, writers, musicians, and everyone seeking to reflect on what it means to be Ukrainian today.
