The National Scientific Medical Library of Ukraine is one of the largest branch library institutions in the country, founded in 1930. Among its first readers were prominent medical scientists – Amosov, Bogomolets, Strazhesko. Despite the fact that during World War II the collections were burned by the occupiers, the library resumed work in 1944, and in 2006 it received the status of a national library. Today its collections number over 1.6 million copies in 35 languages - one of the largest collections of medical and biological literature in Europe, which is used annually by about 65 thousand specialists.
The library is adorned with unique collections: “Medical Ukrainians” with over 2,000 works by Ukrainian scientists, a collection of artistic works by doctors and 41 personal collections from the private libraries of prominent scientists – with autographs, bookplates and rarities of the 17th-18th centuries. In 2016, the Zbigniew Religa Polish Medical Library opened here, only the third Polish library outside Poland in the world. About 20,000 publications from the collections are listed in the State Register of National Cultural Heritage.
