The passage courtyard leading to Reitarska Street is one of those urban routes that reveals Kyiv from within — beyond its formal façades.
Just past Suzirya Theatre, in the direction of Lvivka Square, visitors can walk through an archway and a series of inner courtyards that lead directly to Reitarska Street.
In the past, such passage courtyards were a common feature of central Kyiv. They connected city blocks, made movement easier, and helped shape the living urban fabric of the city.
Today, each preserved passage offers a rare opportunity to experience Kyiv beyond its monumental streetscapes: courtyard wings of former estates, service buildings, remnants of private gardens, old staircases and balconies, as well as contemporary street art that blends organically into the historic environment.
These spaces reveal the city’s architectural layering — different eras, changing scales, and an ongoing dialogue between past and present.
Such courtyards preserve the intimate atmosphere of Old Kyiv and allow visitors to quite literally “read” the history of the city, step by step, as they move from one street to another.
