The People’s Memorial on Maidan Nezalezhnosti arose spontaneously during the Russian-Ukrainian War of Independence as a space of shared pain and memory. Small blue-yellow flags with names, dates of life and names of units became simple but extremely eloquent symbols of the price that Ukraine pays for freedom. The memorial does not have an official status, but this is what made it truly people’s – alive and constantly growing.
Until 2014, this place was associated with holidays, concerts and the main Christmas tree of the country, but after the shootings on Maidan and the beginning of the war, it gradually turned into a space of silence and sorrow. Since the summer of 2022, the memorial has begun to grow rapidly: new flags, flowers and lamps appear every day. For many families of the dead and missing, this is the only place where the name of a loved one has a visible presence in the public space.
Today, the People’s Memorial is not about the number of flags, but about the depth of shared pain and memory. Kyiv residents stop here, people from other cities come, foreign delegations come here together with the President of Ukraine. This is a place not only to honor the dead, but also a reminder of the responsibility of the living to remember every name and preserve the truth about the war in the history of the country.
