Sofiivska Street leads from Maidan Nezalezhnosti up to Sofia Square. The street has been known under its current name since the late 18th century: it connected Khreshchatyk and Lypky with the Old Town, and it was along it that ceremonial processions and high-ranking guests passed. The steep climb always caused trouble for residents – in winter horses fell and carriages broke down, and in 1893 homeowners even turned to the mayor with a collective request to reduce the slope. Built up mainly in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries, the street had the status of a first-class street: only stone houses with at least two floors were allowed to be built here.
House No. 16 became a real center of Ukrainian musical culture: composers Levko Revutsky, Platon Mayboroda, Andriy Olkhovsky, Anatoly Kolomiyets lived here – and it is still home to the Center for Musical Information and the Music Fund of Ukraine.
