The National Academy of Music of Ukraine at 1/3 Gorodetskogo Street is one of the most prestigious music universities in Europe, dating back to 1863. At that time, a branch of the Russian Musical Society was opened in Kyiv, which over the years grew into a music school. There were repeated attempts to turn it into a conservatory — even Sergei Rachmaninov supported the status of a conservatory — and finally, in 1913, it succeeded. The conservatory building on Maidan with white columns of the Corinthian order — the former Continental Hotel, built in the 1890s — was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in 1955–1958. During the Euromaidan, its halls became a shelter for activists and a hospital for the wounded. The conservatory also has an opera studio, opened in 1938 — the only one in Ukraine that functions as a full-fledged independent opera house. The Great Hall has been named after Vasyl Slipak, an opera singer and soldier who died at the front, since 2017. In 2025, the academy was ranked among the top 100 best art institutions in the world according to the international QS ranking.
