The Wall of Memory of Those Who Fell for Ukraine is located along the wall of the St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery near St. Michael’s Square. The metal structures feature photographs and short biographies of volunteers, servicemen, and law enforcement officers who died defending Ukraine from Russian aggression. The memorial was created in 2014 as a response to the growing losses – initially as a small banner near the National Military History Museum, and in August 2015, with the blessing of Patriarch Filaret, it was expanded along the monastery wall. In 2020, the wall was updated, adding almost 4.5 thousand new photographs.
The wall has become a living memorial that is constantly being updated: an electronic terminal has been installed nearby, through which you can find information about the fallen soldiers. Every year, memorial events are held here – in particular, on the anniversary of the exit from the Ilovaisk Cauldron. Families of the dead, fellow citizens, public figures, and foreign guests, including high-ranking diplomats, come to the wall. It is a place of mourning and remembrance, where every face on the wall reminds us of the price of freedom.
