Kyiv Funicular (Lower Station)

Kyiv Funicular (Lower Station)

The Kyiv Funicular is a unique transport system connecting the historic Upper City with Podil. Opened on May 7, 1905, it became the second funicular in the Russian Empire after the one in Odesa. The idea of creating an “electric inclined lift” belonged to engineer Artur Abrahamsen, while the project was developed by engineers Mykola Piatnytskyi and Oleksandr Baryshnykov.

The lower station is located at Poshtova Ploshcha, near the River Station of Kyiv. Originally, the route was 38 meters shorter and ended higher up, but during the reconstruction of 1928, the line was extended directly to the square.

The architectural appearance of the modern stations was formed after a major renovation in 1984: the stations received new decoration according to the project of architects János Vigh, Valentyn Yezhov and others. The upper station, which opens onto Mykhailivska Square, is decorated with stained-glass windows created by master Ivan Valentyn Zadorozhnyi.
